Tarantino ready to work as oldest festival opens

THE Venice film festival opened yesterday with jury president Quentin Tarantino, who must ultimately decide who walks away with the coveted Golden Lion award at the closing ceremony on September 11, saying his time on the island would be more work than play.

“There’s a lot of really exciting movies, exciting directors. It’s a fantastic line-up,” he said. “I’m keen with anticipation. I’ve been on a few juries and I love it. It’s a joy to me. But it’s work. We’re not here for vacation.”

The opening movie was “Black Swan,” starring Natalie Portman as a ballet dancer in New York whose position is threatened when a beautiful newcomer arrives.

The thriller, directed by Darren Aronofsky, officially kicked off the annual celebration of cinema on the Lido waterfront where stars, fans and reporters rub shoulders for 11 days.

Festival director Marco Mueller has opted for youth in his choice of directors of the 23 competition films, and he will also hope the presence of Hollywood mavericks can make up for the expected shortage of A-list celebrities this year.

The subject matter, and Gallo’s reputation as an uncompromising, eccentric artist, make it one of the more eagerly anticipated movies in competition.

Actor and director Casey Affleck presents documentary “I’m Still Here”, about his brother-in-law actor Joaquin Phoenix’s decision to retire in 2008 and reinvent himself as a hip-hop musician.

Spotlight shines on Tibet

DISTINCTIVE Tibetan dances and singing will take place this week at the Expo as Tibet Culture Week began yesterday.

The week will also include traditional Tibetan medicines, Tibetan calligraphy and Tangkha paintings.

More than 400 Tibetan artists spent more than 50 hours on a train in order to perform at the World Expo through Sunday.

The performances and exhibitions showcase typical Tibetan culture involving both professional and folk artists, said Zhang Zhizhong, director of the Arts Department of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

One of the highlights of the week is the percussion performance by 120 peasants. They will each play a waist drum.

What makes the performance truly special is that these peasants have never before left their hometown of Gongga, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see the drumming, said Jiang Bai Jia Cuo, director of the performance.

Mexico nabs another drug lord

A TEXAS-BORN fugitive known as “the Barbie,” who allegedly led a violent smuggling network, grinned as he was paraded in handcuffs before reporters in Mexico City yesterday – the third suspected drug lord to fall in Mexico in the past 10 months in a coup for President Felipe Calderon’s war on cartels.

Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who got his improbable nickname from his fair complexion, is wanted in the United States for allegedly smuggling tons of cocaine. In Mexico, he is blamed for a brutal turf war that has included bodies hung from bridges, decapitations and shootouts as he and a rival fought for control of the divided Beltran Leyva cartel.

As he came before reporters, he still wore the green polo shirt in which he was captured the day before. He grinned as police described a high-flying and violent life.

Security forces had been closing in on Valdez for over a year, the biggest breakthrough being the death of his boss,These bags are the perfect canvas laptop bags to give to your Mom for Mother’s Day Arturo Beltran Leyva, in a December shootout with marines, Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas said.

The arrest of several of Valdez’ allies,a search of Khan’s apartment found the same particles on clothing, a suitcase and a 15 laptop bag US intelligence tips and other sources provided evidence that Valdez had left his home of 10 years in the resort of Acapulco to lead a lower-profile life in wealthy neighborhoods of Mexico City,I continued my journey past the old “10th Street High School,” admiring how my former bags for school district has taken gentle care of my old “middle school. Rosas said.

Federal police nearly nabbed Valdez during a raid in an upscale neighborhood of the Mexican capital on August 8. He got away, Rosas said, but police found him hiding out in a woody weekend getaway outside the Mexican capital. He was captured on Monday.

Simon Briggs Lose your faith in sport and you play right into the hands of the bad guys

A brush with one of sport’s most blatant cheats – Marion Jones – at the Sydney Olympics has left Andrew in the hang-em-high camp. He was in Stadium Australia when Jones ran 10.75sec for the 100metres, and experienced that unique frisson that comes from 80,000 people catching their breath at the same instant.
makeup brush

Performances of this magnitude have a spine-tingling quality about them. They touch your soul – for better or for worse. So when Jones’s steroid abuse came to light, my friend’s feelings of disenchantment were on a par with the elation he felt at the time. Now he argues that her duplicity robbed him of what should have been one of the highlights of his sporting life. And that he should be compensated for his loss.

“If I went to a Van Gogh exhibition and the paintings turned out to be fakes, or if I went to a concert and it turned out to be a Madonna impersonator, I’d expect to get my money back,” he says. “It would be tough on the sporting body that was staging the event. But maybe the threat of hefty payouts would make them work harder to prevent things like this from happening.”
Sleepwear

It is an interesting argument – and I would be intrigued to know what a moral philosopher would make of it. For a while, he almost had me convinced. But then I realised that his solution would only work in a perfect world.

Unfortunately, the world of sport is full of compromises, grey areas, and – very occasionally – downright grubbiness. Take the utopian ideal that, in theory, every athlete should be doing his utmost to win every event he enters.

That should be part of the credo, right? Especially when they all spend their lives banging on about giving 100 per cent (or, if they’re feeling especially generous, 200 per cent). In practice, though, no one gives 100 per cent, let alone 200.
fashion sunglasses

The only question is how far short of perfection you fall. Earlier this month, Robbie Savage admitted to “not trying” for Birmingham City at a time when he wanted a transfer – a policy he now describes as “disgusting”.

On a more prosaic level, every tennis player or fast bowler knows that he has to husband his energy over the course of a long season. Would you ask for your money back because a player was bowling – or serving – at 10 per cent below his normal speed?

None of this is meant to excuse the crimes of which Pakistan’s cricketers stand accused. They are repugnant. Yet they are also part of a long continuum of sporting misbehaviour, stretching from the relatively trivial (sledging) to the earth-shattering (throwing a match). Wherever there is sport, there will be cheats.
hair wig

Andrew’s argument falls down because you can’t pick a point on the line and say, “Right, this is where we start handing out refunds”. And also because, on a practical level, it would give the administrators a reason to cover up sleaze. Sport is complicated and unpredictable – far more so than an art exhibition or a concert.

Great sporting moments do not sit waiting to be viewed like tame animals in a zoo. A better analogy would be going on tiger safari: you might come up empty-handed, with a miserable 0-0 draw, or even a crooked Test match. But that risk is part of the event. When you catch a glimpse of orange-and-black, out in the wild, it will stay with you forever.
Mens T-shirt

To head off the threat of legal suits from angry spectators, we could perhaps introduce a disclaimer. “I attend this event in the expectation that the players will perform to the best of their ability.

However I accept that some of them may have argued with their girlfriends this morning, others may be carrying an injury, and a couple would rather be playing for another club.

“On rare occasions, I may discover that I have been watching athletes who used chemicals to help them succeed. Or, even worse, who deliberately tried to lose a match. In such a case, I will feel sick to my stomach. But I also accept that my attendance here is – to some degree – an act of faith. And if I lose my faith in sport, the fixers, the fakers and the dopers will have won.”

Weekend watch Easy schedule sees Chelsea off to a flying start

Every Monday, CBCSports.ca senior writer and soccer expert John F. Molinaro will recap the weekend’s European soccer action, examining the key developments in the continent’s top leagues.

ENGLANDFashion handbags,Ladies Handbag,cheap bags,brand handbag

Defending champions Chelsea remain the only perfect team in the Premier League, topping the table with nine points following a win at home against Stoke City on Saturday.

The Blues racked up a pair of 6-0 victories in their first two outings of the season, but found the going a bit more difficult this time around, as they only defeated Stoke 2-0.

It’ll be interesting to see how Chelsea does once they play a tough team. Aside from Stoke, the Blues’ previous wins came against West Brom and Wigan, and its next two matches are against West Ham and newly-promoted Blackpool.

After that, it gets considerably tougher for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, with games against Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa in quick succession.

SPAIN

The Jose Mourinho Era at Real Madrid began with a whimper, as los blancos were held to a 0-0 draw by Real Mallorca on the road.

No big deal, really. It is the first week of the season, so there’s plenty of time for Mourinho to leave his mark. However, the Portuguese manager will be concerned about the health of fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, who injured his ankle in the game and will be sidelined for a few weeks.

Rivals Barcelona began the campaign on the right note, winning 3-0 away at Racing Santander courtesy of goals from Lionel Messi, and World Cup heroes David Villa and Andres Iniesta.

Early prediction: Villa will win the scoring title in Spain this season. The former Valencia man has always been a potent goal-scorer, but now he can rely on the service from the Holy Trinity of Messi, Iniesta and Xavi.

ITALY

There were two starting results from Italy on the opening weekend of the Serie A campaign.

Juventus was the big spender in the off-season, splashing big cash on a slew of star players to revamp their starting line-up and improve on a disappointing seventh-place finish in 2009-10. But the Bianconeri put in a tame performance in Puglia on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Bari.womens jeans, discount Jeans

Meanwhile, an AC Milan team that most critics were writing off this year (that was, of course, before they signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to a one-year loan deal) cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Lecce at San Siro.

Juventus looked far from its best, but keep in mind that Bari are no pushovers – they finished 10th last season and are always difficult to beat at home. Furthermore, it’s going to take some time for the Bianconeri to find their way after bringing in a boatload of new players. Patience is the key.

As for Milan, a 4-0 win over newly-promoted Lecce isn’t anything to get too excited about.  Their aging defence will be their Achilles’ heel this season, especially against teams that offer a lot more going forward than Lecce.

GERMANY

Think the Premiership is the only league capable of producing high-scoring matches? Think again. The Bundesliga saw two crazy games this past weekend, the first occurring on Saturday when Mainz upset title favourites Wolfsburg 4-3.

Buoyed by the arrival of Brazilian playmaker Diego from Juventus, Wolfsburg jumped out to a 3-0 after 30 minutes and looked well on their way to collecting an easy three points. But Mainz pulled a goal back just before half time and scored three times in the final 45 minutes to complete the comeback.

Twenty-four hours later, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen combined for nine goals. Moenchengladbach earned a 6-3 decision on the road, its first win over Bayer in 16 years.

It was impossible to see this one coming. The previous week, Bayer was impressive in rolling to a 2-0 road victory over Borussia Dortmund, which seemed to be an early statement of intentions from the club labelled “Never-kusen” – Bayer have never won the German league title, finishing second on four occasions from 1997 to 2002.

FRANCE

It’s still early days and too premature to suggest a new dawn in French football. Still, it is refreshing to see some new blood at the head of the table.
NHL Washington Capitals

Toulouse lead the way in Ligue Un with a perfect 4-0 record and remain the only perfect team in France’s top division thanks to a 2-0 win over Nancy on Saturday. Not bad for a club that recently sold their best player, striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

While le Tefece is riding high, France’s Big Four – Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and PSG – have stumbled out of the gate with only four points each. Yoann Gourcuff’s debut for Lyon got off to a bad start, as OL were handed a 2-0 defeat at the hands of modest Lorient, who just happens to be coached by Christian Gourcuff – Yoann’s father.

While Bordeaux and Marseille battled to a 1-1 stalemate, PSG lost 3-1 to Sochaux on Sunday. PSG coach Antoine Kombouare has to be worried about his back line, as the defence has conceded a whopping nine goals in their last three games.

Vikings receiver Rice has hip surgery

Brett Favre’s job just got a whole lot tougher.

Favre and the Minnesota Vikings will play the first half of the season — or more — without Pro Bowl receiver Sidney Rice, who had hip surgery this week.discount mbt shoes

Coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that Rice had the procedure in Vail, Colo., on Monday night. He couldn’t give a specific timetable for Rice’s return, but said typically it takes about eight weeks before a player can even get back to practice, let alone game action.

“I would think (it will take) probably at least eight weeks before we’re talking about doing anything,” Childress said.

It’s a huge blow for the Vikings, who have very little depth at receiver. Percy Harvin has struggled with migraines during the pre-season, and the team signed veteran Javon Walker on Tuesday to help out.

After catching just 45 passes during an injury-plagued first two seasons in Minnesota, Rice emerged as Brett Favre’s go-to guy in his third season with 83 catches for 1,312 yards and eight TDs. He earned his first Pro Bowl bid, though he was injured in the playoffs and did not play again.MBT Women\’s shoes

Favre raved about Rice’s combination of size and leaping ability, saying he felt confident throwing the ball his way even if Rice appeared to be well covered. Favre’s confidence in him allowed Rice to blossom, positioning himself as one of the best downfield threats in the NFC despite a lack of game-breaking speed.

He saw three specialists in the off-season to examine his injured hip and declined to have surgery, hoping the condition would heal on its own. Rice never participated in a practice during training camp, and it became apparent late last week that the injury was not improving fast enough for him to be ready for the season opener against New Orleans on Sept. 9.

Childress said all the specialists, along with team doctors, agreed that surgery was not needed in the off-season. Rice, who is in the final year of his contract for just US$550,000 this season, decided something more had to be done.

“I can’t feel what he’s feeling,” Childress said. “In the end, it’s up to him whether he wanted to have that procedure or whether he could press through.”

Online dictionary spells end for the printed words

IT’S been in print for over a century, but in future the Oxford English Dictionary – the authoritative guide to the English language – may only be available online.

Publisher Oxford University Press said yesterday that burgeoning demand for the online dictionary has far outpaced demand for the printed versions.,UGG Mini 5854

By the time the lexicographers behind the dictionary finish revising and updating the latest edition – a gargantuan task that will take many more years – publishers are doubtful there will still be a market for the printed form.

The online Oxford English Dictionary (www.oed.com) now gets 2 million hits a month. The current printed edition – a 20-volume, 750 pound (US$1,165) set published in 1989 – has sold about 30,000 sets.

“At present we are experiencing increasing demand for the online product,” a statement from the publisher said. “However, a print version will certainly be considered if there is sufficient demand.”

Nigel Portwood, chief executive of Oxford University Press, told the UK’s Sunday Times he didn’t think the newest edition will be printed.

“The print dictionary market is just disappearing, it is falling away by tens of percent a year, the students from the Greater Nanticoke Area elementary bag to school.” he said. Its collection of crafty gifts by local artists ranged from felt iPod cases to black stationery, funky jewelry and two owl T-shirts

Although the comments relate primarily to the full-length dictionary, the publisher says the convenience of the electronic format is also affecting demand for its shorter dictionaries.

The first installment of the Oxford English Dictionary was published in 1884, and it kept growing for decades until the complete text went out in 1928. It was the first comprehensive English dictionary since Samuel Johnson’s “A Dictionary of the English Language” published in 1755, and has since evolved to become the accepted authority on the meaning and history of words.

The version users now consult – the second edition – has 291,500 entries, plus 2.4 million quotations as sources. Unlike shorter printed versions such as the single-volume Oxford Dictionary of English, it doesn’t track current usage, it simply includes every single word.

A team of 80 lexicographers are preparing the third edition of the dictionary, which is just under one-third complete. There’s no date for when it will be ready.

The Oxford English Dictionary first went online in 2000, offering paying subscribers a much faster way to look up words. It has also helped the dictionary catch up with rapid semantic changes and the large numbers of new words. Updates to the dictionary’s online version are added every three months.

HK visitors get VIP access

THE Philippines Pavilion provided VIP entrance to Hong Kong visitors and turned down background music in a show of sympathy yesterday for the eight Hong Kong tourists who were killed in a hostage standoff in Manila on Monday.

Hong Kong Pavilion officials and staff members held a moment of silence in the pavilion for the victims yesterday at 8am.

“We want to express our condolences and apologies to the victims and their families,” Tess Maricio, manager of the Philippines Pavilion, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

She said she hoped visitors from all over the world, especially Hong Kong, could visit the pavilion to learn that Filipinos are good people.

“This incident has really saddened Filipino people because we are friendly, happy and peace loving people, and this is what the pavilion wants to show the world,” she said.

People from Hong Kong can enter the pavilion directly after making a reservation by e-mail or phone call to the pavilion. This privilege was previously only for VIP visitors.

The pavilion’s theme is “Performing Cities.” Traditional songs and dances are held every 10 minutes on the three stages. The performances will not be shortened because it would be unfair to visitors who come to the pavilion to see the country’s culture and entertainment, Maricio added.

Maricio said she hopes Chinese visitors will continue to visit the pavilion and not connect the hostage incident with the Expo because the Expo’s core spirit is about peace and friendship.

The pavilion attracts about 42,000 visitors every day and that has not changed since the hostage incident.
